The new, Generation 2 series of multi-function displays are a revolutionary step forward in fish finding and navigation-electronics innovation. Featuring lightning-fast chart redraw, they combine the legendary, best-in-class Lowrance technology, fully integrated weather and radar solutions and an attractive case design that is more convenient to install. Plus, a new easier-to-use operating system simplifies access to frequently used (and more advanced) features, to enhance your boating pleasure and fishing success. For building an onboard system, HDS provides a truly advanced definition in multi-tasking compatibilities. Its exclusive, high-resolution 5-inch 16-bit color SolarMAX PLUS display with adjustable backlighting makes it a viewing wonder, day or night. To precisely find your way, a new high-sensitivity 16-channel GPS+WAAS antenna is built-in. The plotter comes pre-loaded with Lake Insight (Inland) Cartography, which gives life-like representations not only of the topography of the land, but of the underwater structure as well. Plus, HDS units are now fully compatible with all Navionics chart cards – Platinum+, Platinum, Platinum HotMaps – with satellite imagery, aerial photos, and 3D views. The unit it self is amazing and I'm sure once I figure out how to use all the features I will be very happy with it. Here's my problem; there's no instruction manual,they give you a cd-rom. If this was a TV down in my living room that would be fine but its not its on my boat so every time I have a question I have to wait till I get home to look it up. I called customer service and they said I could print it or they would print it and send it(for a fee)250 "loose pages". I have a 23' CC and have very limited dry storage for a big fat folder. But yet they give you a beautifully bind ed,laminated installation manual(58 pages),how many times am I going to install it??? This is definitely not a turn on and go unit,it has many complex features including sea talk and sirius weather.If you do purchase this unit I would highly recommend not getting it preloaded (charts)rather purchase a local navionics platinum gold chart($200) it gives you a 3D google earth view that is truly amazing including bottom contour,wrecks etc...

Frustrating and Disappointed

Like the other reviewer, I'm frustrated and disappointed. We haven't even used it yet. I wanted to create some routes and waypoints that we use often. I wanted to do this on my PC and transfer it to the A50. I can't. There's no software or charts that come with the A50 for the PC, unless I want to spend more money. How hard would it be to have PC software and charts available for a registered device? So, I'm stuck using a 5" screen to program a route to use with the autopilot. Even if I want to spend more money and purchase software (Navionic's Navplanner2 will work, I was told at $129), I also have to buy and use a compact flash card to transfer the routes and waypoints. There's no USB connection to hook it up to a PC. Ridiculous in 2011.We just paid a lot of money, and I'm ready to throw the thing out before I even give it a chance. I'm also so looking forward to carrying my PC on my boat so that I can look-up instructions while I'm using the equipment (said sarcastically).Maybe I'll feel differently after I start using it. If so, I'll update this review.

Lowrance Elite-4 DSI Combination Plotter/Sounder with Down Scan Imaging. Exclusive Lowrance DownScan Imaging innovation displays crystal-clear photo-like views of the underwater world below the boat. No interpretation needed to see thermoclines, fish, bottom structure and detail. With 350 Watts of RMS power, you'll see bottom down to 200 ft. Use 455KHz to give you wider and deeper coverage, and 800KHz for enhanced detail. The unit comes with a hi-speed Skimmer transom mount transducer with built-in temperature sensor, and an optional trolling motor bracket is available. Find your location with the built-in GPS and chartplotter with built-in worldwide basemap. You can add optional Navionics Gold charts and Fishing HotSpots via the micro-SD card slot. Store up to 3,000 waypoints in the internal memory, and communicate to an autopilot or other device using NMEA 0183 data. See it all on a hi-resolution 3.5-Inch backlit color LCD that features a wide viewing angle and sunlight visibility. The Humminbird 858c Combo features a brilliant color, wide-screen 480V x 800H 7-Inch display, 83/200KHZ dual beam sonar with 500 Watts of transmit power, GPS chartplotting with external antenna and advanced Fishing System capabilities. Rugged construction and ease of use make Humminbird fishfinders a favorite of anglers worldwide. The built-in Contour XD chart covers the contiguous U.S.A. coastline and inland lakes and rivers. On the coast, this clearly shows features as small as canals, and many coastal navigation lights. Inland, the Contour XD features virtually all recreational lakes and rivers, plus hundreds of thousands of small lakes that don’t appear on other charts. In other words, your lake is likely to be there! Internal memory has a capacity of 2,750 waypoints, 45 routes, and 50 tracks of 20,000 points each. Optional network modules include an external GPS antenna, WeatherSense barometer, wireless sonar link, Cannon Link for control of downrigger, Interlink for multiple units, and radar. Sonar features include Freeze Frame, instant image update, real time sonar window, selective Fish ID, echo enhancement, screen snapshot to SD card, split screen zoom, True Arch technology, and wide/narrow cone split screen. The user-friendly technology includes custom digital readouts, large digit view, quick disconnect mounting, triplog, and X-press menu system. Excellent Unit

I purchased this in August 2010 excellent delivery time, The 898cSI is great sonar unit wished I had purchased earlier. My one recomendation would be to study the manual and fimilarize your self with settings and operation in the simulation mode this will save you lots of time on the water. Don't forget to register with Hummingbird I received my unit and there were updates already available which I updated as soon as I installed the unit. Make sure to reset defaults before and after updates are installed.

Controls are intuitive - easily used with very little instruction. The displays are clear and easy to read. The detail on the side and down imaging is impeccable. I trolled into an area with multiple stick-ups, looked at my down-image and it appeared just like a forest below me!The transom-mount transducer cracked after our first use on a wooded KY lake - even with the break-away mount in place. I have already ordered a new one. If this continues, I will downgrade my rating. I mounted the transducer as high as functionally possible on the transom, right at the idle-speed waterline, so it should not have cracked that easily.Overall this is an excellent unit. I would suggest you go out to the internet and extensively research the use of side and down imaging, as the instructions that came with the unit were mostly sales pitches and not practical applications of the new technology. That said, I will still buy another Humminbird when the time arises.

I've had this unit for nearly two months now. The side imaging is amazing! It can go out to 250 feet on either side of the boat. The shallower you are, the less side range you get, so at about 40 feet, I get all 250 feet to either side.I found may new wrecks in the Tampa area, and one of them actually looks like a patina photograph when looking at it with side imaging. Absolutely amazing!The video out means that you can hook this thing up to any TV, I tried it, and it works. what comes out of the video out connection is a replica of the screen, I wish I could select what to display on it, such as the map, sonar or side imaging, but that's not the case. I'm thinking of hooking this thing up to a 14-16" flat screen to get better details.The detail of the side imaging is amazing, I can clearly see abandoned crab traps at the bottom.The basic map that comes with it is, hmm.. not as good as expected, so I shelled out the $200 for the Navionics Platinum card, and now it's like using Google Earth with detailed bottom contours.having this unit on my boat actually makes me glad that my Lowrance fell apart!Two drawbacks, hence the 4 stars. There are preset buttons on the front (3 or 4) for quick access to pre-programmed screens, I could use a few more, and the screens (i.e. half map/half sonar) cannot be mixed and matched, you get what you get so If I wanted a screen broken down to sonar and map on one side, and side imaging on the other, I'm basically out of luck. The unit is software upgradable, so hopefully Hummingbird will make that functionality available someday.

Product Description

Lowrance Elite-7 HDI Gold, 7" Color Plotter/Sounder w/ Navionics Gold Charts, and 83/200+455/800 transom mount transducer. Exclusive Lowrance DownScan Imaging innovation displays crystal clear photo-like views of structure, bottom, thermoclines, baitfish and predator fish directly beneath the boat. No interpretation needed. Selectable 455 kHz sounding for wider and deeper sonar imaging coverage, with 800 kHz for enhanced viewing of targeted locations. The unit also features a conventional 83/200KHz sonar suitable for inland waters. The brilliant widescreen 7-Inch, 800x480 pixel SolarMAX 256-color TFT display has unmatched screen brightness, contrast, resolution and viewing detail at wider angles and in bright sunlight. Adjustable screen and keypad backlight improves usability and visibility day or night. The internal 16-channel GPS antenna provides precision for navigation, and an external antenna option is also available for customized applications. The unit comes pre-loaded with Navionics Gold cartography for the U.S., and a waterproof micro-SD memory card slot is fully compatible with Navionics Fishing Hot Spots and Lake Master map cards in the micro-SD format for U.S. anglers. Built-in memory allows for up to 3,000 waypoints, 100 routes/100 waypoints per route and 100 retraceable plot trails/up to 10,000 points per trail. Package includes Elite-7, mounting bracket, transom mount transducer, installation hardware, and owner's manual. Covered by a one year parts and labor warranty. This unit is awesome. The vivid imagery from the downscan is remarkable. Best unit for the money hands down!! Very user friendly and the gold sdi card gives great chart at a click of a button. also the split screen and triple screen view is an awesome feature.

could be better

The value of this machine is good. Very nice chart plotting and sonar machine. If you are buying for the down imaging feature, don't. That feature is more or less a black and white version of the sonar. If you buy this also purchase a clear screen protector and put it on the screen before you come close to the water. I didn't and realized the waterspots don't come off the screen similar to a laptop screen. After applying the screen protector I've had little issue with that. One poor chart plotting feature is that when your boat runs off the map screen you must manually maneuver the cross hairs to move the map. That's pretty annoying when you're moving at a good clip. Other than that it's been very helpful on the water. It also does not come with a sun cover so you have to purchase that separately. My unit was made in Mexico. Good luck and tight lines!

Great color and clarity on charts and graphs, however, as expensive as it is, I was very disappointed that it did not even come with a cover for the screen. That should be a necessity to keep the screen from being scratched when not in use.
