First impressions
By Raymond J. WILFINGER
Following is an early assessment my newly purchased RayMarine a65. Please note the subject is the a65 not the A65 (note case). The earlier A65 has physical knobs and switches as opposed to the touchscreen of the a65. RayMarine E70076 is the unique, unambiguous identifier of the a65 being described here. For further clarification RayMarine software update version 6.27 and Navionics Marine & Lakes USA were installed almost immediately upon receipt of the device. For this review the device is bare with no connection to any peripheral devices or the NMEA network. The first impression is the device is rugged and well made. The capacitive touch screen is almost too responsive but the powerful microprocessor has no problem with the activity. GPS sensitivity, screen brightness and viewing angle leave little to be criticized. The intuitive user interface is outstanding and anyone who has an Android or Apple smartphone or tablet will feel right at home. Linux appears to be under the cover but there is little further technical detail available. Users buy a phone knowing the processor speed, the memory capacity available, etc. It is difficult if not impossible to find any of that information for the a65 or competing plotters. All in all this is an impressive device but not without disappointments.Given there is only one SD slot the number one disappointment is the choice of a micro SD card instead full size card. It is very difficult to handle an SD card the size of a thumbnail under ideal conditions let alone under weigh. Removing the micro SD is not difficult - it is impossible without a pair of tweezers (yes, even after the card is partially sprung). Poor design. A full size SD card isn't all that big and this is a box not a paper thin phone. A close second is the incessant beep whenever the GPS looses its fix and a pop-up that freezes further activity until acknowledged. Users should be able to silence and choose a visual display when this vital information presents itself. The third disappointment, but not unique to RayMarine products, is the incompatibility of Waypoint/Route/Track (Trails) file formats. Those favorite Waypoints on a competitor's product - they will have to typed in point by point (GPX and CSV not withstanding) for transfer to the a65.On the other hand RayMarine has been quite aggressive in releasing software updates for the a65. As great as the user interface is there still are some changes hopefully they will make in future software updates. First pinch-to-zoom - currently swiping the touchscreen of the chart displayed to other locations is lightning fast (you never want to return to physical buttons after the experience) but changing the size of the area displayed, while also fast, still requires touching the plus or minus screen buttons. Other changes should include user option to display more than two Data Overlay cells (in addition to time, SOG and COG it would be convenient to be able to display cursor coordinates without having pop the Data Bar). These revisions and the option to change the Status Bar to free up screen space should be considered (the user should be able to choose which if any peripheral devices to display). Finally, it would be helpful to be able to mirror the screen on a PC, Mac or tablet to allow editing.Bottom line - a great device but there is always room for improvement. Just for the record in these days of disclaimers - I am a private individual and other than as a customer I have no relationship with the firms named or their competitors. Enjoy!
